Corfu Snakes When you're at Corfu for the holidays, you might have heard that there is a great snake population on the island. That's right, it's not a lie, nor is it a wild rumor. At Corfu you can find approximately a dozen of snake species. If you don't like snakes, no problem at all, you will have a great holiday at the greenest island of Greece. Snakes don't like people as much as you don't like snakes, maybe more. So if you don't want contact, you will not have it, leave it up to the snake. They will try to stay out of the way. If you are intrigued by this unusual but beautiful wild animals you will not be disappointed looking for snakes. There are some rules when you want to meet the snakes of Corfu. First of all, realize that they are wild animals, unsociable. Most of them are not venomous, so not really dangerous. Though some of them can be grumpy or even aggressive when you interfere in their habitat. They might bite when you provoke or chase them. So keep distance and treat them with respect. Careful! One of the most dangerous snake species of Europe is the Horned Viper. It lives on Corfu too, so be very carefull with this poisonous exemplar. Keep distance, it has a long reach. When bitten by accident, you have to go to the hospital as soon as possible! Here is what you must do, or not: Call 166 (Common Emergency Number) immediately Note the time of the bite Keep calm and still as movement can cause the venom to travel more quickly through the body Remove constricting clothing or jewelry because the area surrounding the bite will likely swell Don’t allow the victim to walk Carry or transport them by vehicle Do not kill or handle the snake.
