Public Transport Corfu
While staying on Corfu it would be a shame to not spend some time seeing the rest of the Island, even it is only visiting Corfu town to do some shopping. There are several options available for those who want to go exploring Corfu.
The Green Bus company provides the local service in this area and for all rural journeys on the island. Despite its name not all their buses are green. Bus stops are scattered along Corfu and have the most recent timetable displayed. The adult fare for a single journey is plusminus three Euros. Return tickets are not available for purchase.
Anyone wishing to see the North of Corfu should get the bus to Tzavros and then pick up the northward bound buses there. Wait at the stop beside the kiosk, across the road, if heading to Arillas, Roda or Sidari. Those heading to Kassiopi, Nissaki or Ipsos, should wait at the stop round the corner, near the post office, on the road to Ipsos.
Anyone wanting to go only as far as Dassia can pick up a blue bus (usually blue and white) at the same stop. Once at the bus station it is possible to take a bus to other central and southern areas, ask at the information kiosk for the latest timetable to allow you to plan your trip. Anyone wishing to travel in the Town and its main suburbs are best to use the blue bus service once in town. The main depot can be found in San Rocco Square where the information booth has timetables and sells tickets in advance for easy travelling.
Renting a car on Corfu
For those who don’t want to be tied to public transport there are several car hire shops throughout the length of the resort. Prices are reasonable, shop around and you should be able to find a car to suit your needs. Driving licences must be provided, don’t worry if you have forgotten yours as you can contact the DVLA and get a copy faxed out. Their telephone number is 0044 870 2400009. Please remember seat belts must be worn at all times, fines are heavy if caught. Also watch the speed limits, police traps are common and again the fines are quite large. Finally do not drink and drive, the laws here are very strict on that issue.
Other transportation
If you fancy hiring a scooter or bike you will find that most of the car hire places have bikes and quad bikes for hire as well. As with the car please observe all laws including wearing crash helmets, this is compulsory here with heavy fines. The hire shop will provide you with crash helmets. Again a full driver’s licence must be provided.
If you fancy keeping fit while exploring the surrounding area why not hire a push bike. These can be found at some of the hire shops. Again helmets should be worn and will be provided by the hire shop.
For those not wishing to drive or use bikes, taxis are an ideal way to get to places not covered by public transport.
Most guide books have details of day trips that can be taken in Corfu, taking you to places of interest or secluded beaches. Often the island magazines, there are currently at least three that come out monthly, will have ideas of tours. Visit one of the paper stands you find anywhere on the island to buy one or more of these magazines.
